The information on this site is for the benefit of all persons living in or interested in locating to Smith Township. The township is located in the northwestern corner of Washington County Pennsylvania, about 30 miles west of downtown Pittsburgh. It was founded in 1781 as one of the original 13 townships created with the birth of Washington County and named to honor Rev. Joseph Smith. Click here for the History of Smith Township.
There are just under 5,000 people living in the most rural residential area that covers about 34.4 square miles. The population has remained relatively stable, with small losses between the 1990 and 2000 census. Zoning is in effect. Public water and sewerage is available in the more densely populated areas. Public water is provided by Pennsylvania American Water. Public Sewerage is provided by Burgettstown Smith Township Joint Sewerage Authority. The plant is located at 7 Columbia Drive in Joffre which is in Smith Township. State Route 18 is a two lane highway that runs through Smith Township; starting at the Mount Pleasant and Smith Township line traveling north to the Burgettstown Borough line is approximately 4.8 tenths of a mile. Approximately 1.4 tenths of a mile through Burgettstown Borough you are back in Smith Township and then approximately 2.5 tenths of a mile you are in Hanover Township. All of Route 18 that is in Smith Township is named Smith Township State Road.
The interchange at Route 22 (a four lane highway east and west) and Route 18 located in Hanover Township is approximately 1 mile from the Smith Township line on Smith Township State Road. Before the interchange on Route 18 is the Pepsi Roadhouse, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Pavilion, and at the interchange, being developed is a 1,000 thousand plus acre Washington County Industrial Park named Starpointe, all three are located in Hanover Township. Almost any Major Shopping, Tourist or Cultural Attractions are no more then 20 to 30 miles away and easily accessible. Route 22 east connects us with the Pittsburgh Area, primarily the Pittsburgh International Airport approximately 15 minutes on Pennsylvania Turnpike 576 (Toll Road). Traveling east on Route 22, The Mall at Robinson is approximately 18 miles away and the City of Pittsburgh is approximately 30 minutes from the interchange. Traveling west on Route 22 at the interchange approximately 10 to 15 minutes would put you in the State of West Virginia and another 10 minutes crossing the Ohio River would put you in the State of Ohio. South on Smith Twp. State Road approximately 2 tenths of a mile from Cornerstone Care which is located in Smith Township is Mount Pleasant line. From this point you are no more then 20 to 30 minute drive from Washington, PA Area. This area has many Major Shopping places, Tanger Outlets, Meadows Race Track, the Casino at the Meadows and Cultural Attractions. This is why we are known as the Tri-State Area.

Atlasburg, Slovan, Langeloth, Erie Mine, Francis Mine, Harmon Creek, Joffre (Raccoon), Bulger, and Cherry Valley. Other known areas: Bavington Area, Hamilton Plan, Portions of Florence Avenue, Bell Avenue and Walnut Street.

The Burgettstown Community Library offers children’s, youth and adult age books, newspapers, CDs, DVD, VHS tapes, preschool story hour, computers and internet use, a copier and fax machine, public meeting rooms, and an ongoing used book sale. The Library is the home of the Ft. Vance Historical Society and the Washington-Greene County chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame.
